HIGH POINT, N.C., Nov. 11, 2020 – High Point University’s Annual Veterans Day Celebration looked different this year, but even during a global pandemic, the university remained committed to honoring the men and women who served and are serving our country.
This year’s 10th Annual Veterans Day Celebration was offered virtually to community members and in collaboration with The War Memorial Foundation, which supports the Carolina Field of Honor. The event featured musical performances, color guard and various special messages from guests.

During the celebration, HPU President Dr. Nido Qubein emphasized the excitement that surrounds HPU’s traditional in-person celebration, but also that a global pandemic should not stand in the way of honoring the men and women for their dedication and service.
“We thank God for your service,” said Qubein during the virtual program. “This is a God, family and country school. This is a school that believes that flying the American flag is a noble thing to do. This is a school that understands that while America may not be a perfect country, while we may have blemishes in our history, we are still the greatest nation on the face of this earth. And we thank you, veterans, for your service, for your sacrifice, for your love of the United States of America.”
Leaders from the War Memorial Foundation, the community and HPU’s Student Government Association also thanked veterans during the virtual celebration.
“These trying times have dictated this venue, but we are so pleased to team up with High Point University to honor and celebrate the men and women who so faithfully serve this country, along with their families,” said Marine Lt. Col. Scott Matthews, chairman of The War Memorial Foundation, Carolina Field of Honor. “Take the time to reflect and remember those that served and those that are serving today. Let’s pay homage to our real gladiators of our time, the American veteran.”
This year’s special address came from Lieutenant General (Ret.) Robert VanAntwerp, a retired, three-star general, who spoke about service and sacrifice.
“Today on Veterans Day, we remember that our freedom isn’t guaranteed; it’s protected by the men and women in our armed forces,” said VanAntwerp. “To those who fought to secure our way of life and to those fighting for it today, thank you for your service. I believe serving in the military is a calling to a mission greater than oneself and one’s own interests. Thank you for answering the call.”
VanAntwerp also thanked family members who have loved ones serving in the military for their service and sacrifice.
